    I finished chapter 1 on material wealth. As a cyborg, I did buy a couple of books on Reality+ (VR) as well as Robotics. I was able to do cheap VR with just a 50$ headset and also build a productive Robot at work. Maybe Nick will cover all this as things progress in the book. From all the studies in physics I have done, I believe the universe goes through a big bang and big rip and big bang again which is conformal cosmic cosmology model (Dr Sabine supports the same but Dr Penrose calls it religious). We can look for the evidence in CMB. So, I do not clearly agree with Nick that we are going to die a heat death. I think there may be some way not yet proposed for certain species to have advanced technology to move through the cycles. But the historian in me, as well as evidence for the fine tuning of the universe for life, makes me support a lot of Nicks arguments that may be permanent in shape regardless of a cyclical universe. Gives it all the more weight.

    I’m less than 4 minutes into the video and I immediately see it really comes down to the individuals. A strong relationship cannot (easily) be built without both parties having a number of important traits to start with. If both parties have these traits, then the relationship will only fail because of chance (things like unfortunate circumstances). I don’t know exactly what these traits are, but they almost certainly match what I would use to define a “good” person, including: being open and honest (including admitting mistakes and failures), being able to trust, showing/having respect for others, and almost certainly some amount of intellectual capability (which may already be required to fulfill the other traits - a rock fails to have any of these traits while a dog can have most if not all of them). There are numerous questions that I have no idea how to answer. Do you want the other party to be honest with you always - or honest within certain bounds that you define? How much more power should the other party have over you or you over them? How much, how frequent, and what kind of quality of communication is necessary? To what extent should each party be willing to sacrifice for the other? Maybe the answers are all intertwined with one another, or maybe they just depend on the individuals/parties involved, or maybe there’s no right or wrong answer to any of them - would that imply that certain traits are not actually so valuable (but what does the value of any one trait depend on exactly)? Perhaps we’re all just human, therefore imperfect and limited in our ability to understand and experience reality such that most of the specifics don't really matter. A perfectly happy relationship can exist between two people who are both constantly lying and trying to manipulate the other. It’s just unlikely to work out, but that’s all reality is, after all. It’s just the result of lots and lots of interactions that (appear to) boil down to statistics. “Good” people will be much more likely to form a meaningful relationship than “non-good” people. This is closely related to the alignment problem (and the fundamental question at the heart of Effective Altruism: what is “good”?). What does the ideal relationship between humans and AI look like? What would an ideal AGI’s goals and values be? What would a “good” AGI want? An AGI that is “aligned” but dumb is not desirable (but not necessarily even harmful), while of course a smart but unaligned AGI would (very likely) be very bad. Is honesty that important? An AGI that tells you about your terminal illness sounds good unless the AGI believes that telling you about it will likely cause the rest of your life to be significantly less pleasant. But what exact traits are "good" to have in an AGI? Almost certainly you would want an AGI similar to what a “good” person would be like because that would maximize the chances of more "good" things.

    what are your thoughts on marriage ?

  • @StaringCompetition
    @StaringCompetition 18 годин тому

    I’m not here to be rude, so will just say I’ve never met people in a happy marriage post-menopause except where the woman was the financial powerhouse and gave the man carte blanche to sleep around. But having said that it really works for those that go that way. So as a sad lady I’m never going to say my spouse would never be dishonestly unfaithful. And I would struggle with their abdication/defection from our family nest. But once I’m post meno I’m giving him free reign to leave. It’s not so easy though for the kids or finances to do that. So good luck to us all.

    Interesting video, many thanks. I have signed up to the associated substack. FWIW, after watching this, I read an FT article about the UK's attempts to seize boomers' wealth via IHT, etc. I wrote the following, which may provide an insight into the fact that many people, even just middle income, are geographically flexible, and will make considerable efforts to escape taxation. However unhappy or angry that makes left-wingers, it is a blunt reality which they will learn sooner or later. "For our family, my brother and I both escaped the UK several years ago, so we are safe from HMRC. Our mother is following us shortly, and will also cut ties to the UK, to deny UK socialists the ability to seize her money. All European welfare states are in a high tax doom spiral. I recommend that those who can do, escape. It is possible to have a low tax state, in which people live or die within their means. Insufficient people are presently forced to do the latter, and that is why I now am surrounded by many other British expats who are happily paying <10% income tax, and no CGT or IHT. There are many of us, in: Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Cayman, BVI, Bermuda, and the Bahamas, among other places. The US and Asia are a short flight away, depending on our location. Post-1948 de facto socialist delusions about redistribution are bankrupting Western Europe. In reality: • If you tax something, you get less of it. • If you subsidise something, you get more of it. • Redistribution: (a) taxes productivity; and (b) subsidises parasites. • Welfare throws evolution into reverse. Many post-WWII governments set in place a model that “The harder you work, the more we will take from you; the less you work, the more money we'll give you.” Non-contributory welfare states (in the UK's case, which anyone could hop on a dingy across the Channel, and then start placing demands on), were always unsustainable. Over time, capitalism creates wealth across society while redistribution creates poverty. Europe is bankrupting itself trying to prove otherwise. Middle earners and those who with assets should get out. [URL removed because UA-cam blocked it] Sadly, for Europe, ‘Argentina-isation’ beckons. Warn your children to pursue their qualifications so that they too can escape. 🤡📉😱🫣💷⚰🪦 👀🍿🤣 🤷🏻‍♂"

    seen people who were very wealthy, focused on partying, playing cards and racing cars. that seemed pretty boring to me. i like woodworking, for example, it uses processes and techniques and tools that were in use 500 yrs ago because they still work, and are often not so easy to be skillful at without a lot of practice. in utopia, i would not see this changing. I dont see utopia changing who i am or what i like to do. i dont believe "everything is solved" is a condition that will ever exist.

    I disagree with the nihilism thoughts. People have called me this, particularly because I won’t willing cast a vote in the upcoming presidential election, for whomever the democratic and republican ends up being. Why? I choose not to be part of a broken system, (where the “nihilism” comes in) and be associated with choosing one poison, or another, manifested is 2 singular people. I have nothing at the moment to live for, meaning no kids, and no wife. I have no stake in the game after my time in this mortal realm passes. Instead, I have faith. Whether anyone agrees with that, or not, I don’t care. I don’t seek advice, or favor from people that I don’t care about. I only choose to participate in having a relationship with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That is all the more I need to be concerned with, not the evil of men.

      To speak further to that point, concerning my personal mindset on the view of “nihilism:” You speak of (loosely quoted) ‘people (some) going with whatever political tribe that fits them best, or some others even devolving to the point of them not taking interest in anything, anymore.’ You are missing those, like myself, who still objectively observe with interest: the inner and outer workings of politics, (in varying degrees, from person to person) from the local level, up to the presidential level, and beyond into the broadly, overarching, geopolitical realm. The aforementioned description describes me. I believe that it’s still in my best interest to be up to date on all major issues, be they small-local, or expansive-geopolitical. I am more engaged now in learning about everything that I can, with said objective filter, so as to help me understand my sets of mortal morals, and values more fully, along with the same sets for other individuals/groups. What “makes me/others tick,” and our outward reactions to those ticks. Along this journey, I also find myself increasingly interested in learning more about: life, and history, e.g. the origins of civilization out of Mesopotamia, and how that led to the formation of the major Greek Democratic principles. Which then shaped a large proportion of many Western civilizations, including the major principles for those coming over from Europe, whom started the “American” style of (predominantly Greek) democracy, pre US’s/past present/present Empire. Though I respect your opinion of what you were speaking on, it’s obvious that there was at least one major gap, or representative group that you were overlooking. Or maybe you weren’t, it’s after all a short 😜

    • @CompuB1t
      @CompuB1t 23 години тому

      @@pawpawthebeagle9442 I'm still interesting in politics but the thing is that I don't see so much "Democracy" like a "Greek democracy" is more like a "Roman Empire" with presidents and royalty. Btw, few people use the word realm to refer to the world, I like that word and think it best describes it, Nikola Tesla used it too.

    Totally agree and great thoughts! Curious how do we adults in the workforce find ways to make this a possibility for Gen Z and Gen Alfa? It feels like China and other forces are effectively finding ways to capitalize and grow the ‘intellectually lazy’ camp of people through social media and misinformation, and plenty of parents and teachers don’t care enough to educate young folks on critical thinking and facts. Besides doing that with kids of our own, how do we help navigate this in whatever power we do have

    5:30 I'd say we most certainly have a drive toward various forms of achievment and competence, but I'm not sure if it's a drive to "win stuff" per se - I think the winning stuff part is more of a cultural thing. Our "competitive instict" if you like, is in my view, probably exaggerated greatly in this culture of endless hierarchies and endless amounts of status symbols that go way beyond impressing a mate. At the very least, it's not a universal experience. Not to split hairs but I think the idea that human beings are naturally competitive has connotations of justifying a ruthless society by way of "it's in our nature, so we can't change it" kind of thing.

  • @subimaginos
    @subimaginos День тому

    The problem with a "win win" sentiment and "both sides are right" - as a principle (not just this particular topic) - is when one side is simply wrong or has wrong points or simply evil/selfish stances. When you mix wrong and right you absolve the wrong part from responsibility for the sake of "peace in the house". That principle allows wrongdoers to avoid responsibility and keep doing bad things. Sure, sometimes, win win is a good principle to implement. But sometimes, it is the most damaging, especially in the long run.
